This is THE PLACE to find out what our Rotaractors are doing and involved in around the world! (Also it's kind of like our ongoing newspaper). When our members travel or do something awesome, we give them a place to share with us what they are learning, doing and how they are serving wherever they are in the world. Elliott Parke |
Hello, my name is Elliott Parke and I just finished my first year in Accounting and Financial Management at the University of Waterloo. Because I am currently enrolled in a coop program, this summer is my last “free” summer to do with what I want. For this reason, I decided to pack it full of unique experiences all around the world. I started my summer break with five weeks in Trois-Pistoles, Quebec. There, I was participating in a fully government-subsidized, French immersion program called EXPLORE. This program consists of taking university accredited French classes in the morning as well as cultural activities and other fun events in the afternoons and evenings. Less than 24 hours after arriving home from Quebec, I flew out of Toronto, destination: Dakar, Senegal. I would spend the next seven weeks in this West African capital city with the multi-national, student-run organization, AIESEC. Here I would be working with young entrepreneurs. Our main objective was to teach these aspiring professionals the business know-how needed to run a successful company. We also spent some of our time consulting their business plans and advising them on their current ideas for their start-up companies. After my time in Africa comes to a close, I fly north to Nice, France. In between three weeks of relaxing on the awesome Mediterranean beaches and eating my fill of the delicious French cuisine, I will also be taking some French courses at a local university, the “Université Internationale D'Été de Nice” (UIEN). Finally, by the end of August, I will be back on Canadian soil. However, before coming home, I will spend a week in Nova Scotia with some friends, making the most out of my time before I have to be back in Waterloo to commence Year 2.
