Current Local Service Chair: Varnisha Prabakaran
Name: Varnisha,
Year: 18
Program: 1B Biochemistry.
The best thing about my position: Having the opportunity to help people as well as give back to the community in ways I couldn’t have before having this post. Further, it’s made my uni life much more meaningful and exciting.
Why Rotaract: For as long as I can remember, I’ve always had a passion for helping people who aren’t as fortunate as I am. Those who lack some of the basic necessities in life, yet still have a reason to wake up smiling in the morning are such an inspiration to me and that’s what made me join the Interact Club in my High School (thanks dad for encouraging me). Being in the club opened my eyes to the untold stories of many unfortunate people (and animals) and it made me a better person as I learnt more from them than I could have from any boring lecture *hint hint* biology lecture.
The need to give back to the community was then amplified when I joined the Rotaract Club, and it was one of the best decisions I’ve made (actually it was coming to Waterloo since there are like Tim Hortons everywhere, but let’s not go into that). I honestly believe that the Rotaracters are fuelled with a love and passion to keep this club running and together, we do make a difference.
Plan for this semester: This semester, we will be having a coffee house and a bake sale to raise money for the women’s crisis services (a shelter for abused women). The money we raise would go towards accommodating more women who are affected.
Fun fact about me: I love Tim Hortons, DP library, travelling, laughing (if you live on my floor you probably have heard me). However, I dislike sleeping, gaming and geese.
